About the product
1953 Royal Copenhagen Christmas plate, designed by Theodor Kjølner, has as its motif Frederiksborg Castle in Hilleroed. Royal Copenhagen's Christmas plate from 1953 depicts Fredeiksborg Castle on the island of Sealand, not far from Hillerød. In the year 1560 King Frederik II bought the manor Hillerødsholm, where the later King Christian IV was born in 1577. When he became King of Denmark, he decided to build a new castle on this location, and thus the renaissance castle Frederiksborg was a reality.Until 1859 the castle was used for the coronation of Danish kings. In the year 1859 most of the castle was destroyed in a fire, but by the help of spontaneous collections, the castle was rebuilt. In 1877 J.C.Jakobsen offered to finance the restoration of inside of the castle on the condition that the castle could be used as a Museum of National History, with Versailles as ideal. On the 1st of February 1882 the castle was opened to the public, and it still is. 1953 was the year in which Royal Copenhagen decided to drop the word Jul from the border of the plates.
