S/S Vendia departed from Faaborg on 26/9 - 1939 in ballast for Blyth, England. Without warning, the German submarine U-3 opened fire on Vendia on 30/9. The explosion was so powerful that the ship was torn in half and sank. Eleven out of the 17 crew members perished. D.F.D.S. Svana, which was nearby, received orders to take aboard the survivors, but the captain had to sign a piece of paper that was later used as a false admission that the Danish ship had attempted to attack U-3...
