About the item
White Christmas from 1979 is an atmospheric Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate, in which Henry Thelander depicts the winter dream that many associate with the classic Danish Christmas. The motif brings to mind a country street covered in snow, where lights in the windows and the deep cobalt blue glaze create the special calm that Christmas Eve itself holds. At the bottom of the plate stands the text Christmas Eve 1979, which anchors the motif in the year's release and makes this edition easy to recognize for both collectors and those seeking a specific Christmas plate from 1979.

In White Christmas, the title becomes a natural part of the narrative. The snow-covered roofs, the quiet street and the sleigh in the middle of the picture give the scene a nostalgic character, which almost feels like a glimpse of an older Danish Christmas Eve. To the right, children can be seen in front of the grocer's window, and on the building one can read the old-fashioned spelling KJØBM. Opposite, the town's baker can be glimpsed, while a family is on its way home in a sleigh through the white winter. In the background, a windmill can also be seen, which emphasizes the rural Danish atmosphere.

It is precisely this blend of everyday life, tradition and winter poetry that makes the year's motif so charming. The Christmas plate tells not only of snow and December, but also of anticipation, community and the warmth that exists in the midst of the cold. Henry Thelander's motif is rich in small details that make the plate exciting to look at year after year.

Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plate series began in 1895 and was the world's first Christmas plate series. Since 1895, a new plate has been released every year, and the 1979 edition is therefore part of a long and beloved Danish collector tradition. Each edition was produced in a limited quantity, and after the year's final firing, the mold was destroyed, so that the completed production could not be resumed later.

This Christmas plate is at the same time more than a wall plate. As Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plates from 1905 onward measure 18 cm, it can also be used as a small dessert or cake plate for the rest of the year. At Christmas time, it is ideal for serving at the coffee table or as an atmospheric part of the Christmas table, while for the rest of the year it adds a touch of Danish design history and sustainable applied art with soul to the home.
