About the product
1952 Bing & Grondahl Christmas plate, designed by Borge Pramvig, has the title Old Copenhagen Canals at Wintertime with the Thorvaldsen Museum in the background. Bing & Grondahl's Christmas plate depicts Thorvaldsen's Museum in Copenhagen. Bertel Thorvaldsen, Denmark's greatest sculptor, was born in Copenhagen 1770, and at the age of 11, he was admitted into the Copenhagen Art School, where he, at the age of 26 won the big gold medal, which brought him to Rome, where he worked with Reliefs, portrait busts and sculptures for the next 42 years. In 1837 Thorvaldsen retur- ned to Copenhagen with plaster models of his 550 works. These were bequethes to the city of Copenhagen, and in 1839 Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll was chosen to be the architecht of the Thorvaldsen Museum. The museum was completed in 1848, four years after Thorvaldsen's death.
