Desiree Svend Jensen Mother's Day porcelain plates
The motifs of all the mother's day plates are inspired by occasions from the children's world. - All plates have holes for hanging on the back. Today many uses these plates not only for decoration, but as a food plate. 18cm in diameter, which corresponds to a large cake plate, or a small lunch plate. It meets the requirements for the production of food service, and dishwasher safe.
The porcelain factory Desiree Svend Jensen Denmark, started production of Mother's Day plates in 1970 - the year after the first Mother's Day plate was released from Bing & Grondahl.
The design of Mother's Day plates from Desiree in the first few years show mother and child together, afterwards the motif change to show only the children. The plates depict children in everyday situations and we see them in the process of carefree play, in deep concentration while watching exciting new things or try new ideas and together with animals.
The typical gift for mother's day is flowers, but if you are looking for something different, a plate is a good and special idea. If you choose the year you were born, you give your mother a personal and unique gift. If the motif of another plate makes you think of a particular experience, it is of course also an ideal gift for Mother's Day.
Porcelain plates were in very high demand through the 1970s and early 1980s and they were displayed in almost all Danish homes, some were also stored away in the attic in the hope that they over time became even more valuable to sell. Unfortunately fashion changed quickly and the plates were not so popular in the following years. Today the plates are back in interior design in a new and exciting way. The original idea to collect a complete series and hang it on the wall all the way around the room has been reinterpreted so the plates are now being used again. The blue porcelain plates goes well with modern interior design and many choose to display the plates in plate racks in cabinets, on dressers, on desks or other place where they are admired.
Desiree Svend Jensen (Old Copenhagen Blue) stopped their production of Mother's Day plates in 1994. The artists behind Mother's Day plates from Desiree has varied little over the years. The first plate was designed by Maggi Baaring and the second plate was designed by Nulle Øigaard. Mads Stage took over in 1973 and he continued for many years right up to 1987 when Svend Otto S. was entrusted with the design and created the motifs until the series end.

In 1970 the porcelain factory Desiree released its first Mothers Day Plate. This plate was their first production of decorative porcelain plates. Desiree's Mother's Day plates took its motifs from the world of children. In total 25 different plates were released, with different motifs depicting this charming and fascinating world we have all experienced. Some of Denmark's finest artists have contributed with motifs for these plates - among others, Maggi Baaring, Nulle Oigaard, Mads Stage and Svend Otto S.
When Désirée introduced porcelain and the renowned technique underglazing in their production in 1970, it was used for the Mother's Day plates. Later that year they introduced a porcelain Christmas plate. Désirée Denmark started the series of Mothers Day plates in 1970 and ended it in 1994, so this is the last plate in the series.
The motifs of all the Sven Jensen Mother's Day plates were inspired by events from the wonderful world of children. The tradition of Mother´s Day has become very common, just as Christmas. The Mothers Day tradition started in the United States, where the author Julia Ward introduced the Mother´s Day tradition, originally to celebrate Peace. Later it became as we know it today, the Mother´s Day. All arount the world the Mother´s Day is celebrated, however the date vary from country to country. In Denmark Mother´s Day is celebrated the second Sunday in May each year. This day children bring their mother flowers or another kind of gift like a Mothers Day Plate.
Also in 1970 the porcelain Manufacture Desiree released the first Christmas plate, or annual plate, all with motifs inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen Fairytales. These plates were issued from 1970 to 2002.
